CODA SAFETY CHECKLIST

Sailors must check their Sail number with the CODA Registrar at registrar@optican.org to make sure it is a class approved number and it corresponds to the sailor’s hull.

Compliance with the minimum safety standards listed below must be demonstrated to the event’s Safety Officer before permission will be granted to sail in the regatta.

MINIMUM SAFETY STANDARDS:

____ Bow loop (a 5cm loop of line out of the bow gunwale).
____ Bow tow line (minimum 8m long and 5mm thick), tied to mast step. Line must be chafe and knot free, with a bowline loop at the outboard end.
____ 2 bailers attached to the boat by lines tied with bowline knots.
____ 3 airbags, fully inflated (with no leaks) and secured to the hull.
____ Rudder must have a retainer clip.
____ Centerboard retainer line, attached to the hull with a metal hook or a knot (no plastic hooks) and attached to the centerboard by a loop of line.
____ Mast tie or mast clamp, attached to the hull.
____ Mainsheet snap-closed snap hook.
____ Mainsheet bridle with steel ring. Bridle must be no looser than 10cm from the boom at any point.
____ Safety line from mainsheet bridle ring to the boom. There must be no tension on the safety line.
____ Praddle, attached to the boat by a line tied with bowline knot.
____ All lines and rigging must be in good condition.
____ Appropriately sized IODA class approved PFD (minimum buoyancy of 50 Newtons) with a plastic whistle attached by a lanyard.
____ Suitable clothing for the weather (sun protection/warm clothes for cold water etc).
____ Personal bottle of water.
