The Romanian consulate in Toronto recently paid a visit to the Port Credit Yacht Club, confirming the participation of a talented group of young sailors from Romania in the upcoming Steerers’ Invitational and Four Sisters Open youth regattas, sponsored by DriveHG.ca.
16-year-old Sara Cristina Patache, the former Romanian Optimist National Champion, will be competing in the ILCA boat class along with Opti racers 13-year-old Maria Radu and 12-year-old Iulia Vartej. These young sailors represent the Asociatia Club Sportiv Constanta Sailing, a renowned youth sailing organization based in the city of Constanta, located on the picturesque Black Sea coast. Two additional Romanian sailors may also join the team, further enhancing the international presence at our regattas.

A key figure instrumental in enabling this international opportunity is PCYC member, Sorin Grigorof. “It all started when I visited a sailing club in Constanta, Romania,” Sorin shared. “While I was there, I chatted with some of the local club members about the idea of young Romanian sailors coming to compete in Canada. We quickly realized how great this could be for everyone involved. Romanian kids would get to sail in different conditions and experience our sailing community. It’s a fantastic way to build international friendships and help the sport grow, and I’m really excited to see it happen.”
Sorin was also pivotal in connecting the Romanian consulate with PCYC, where past commodore Mark Searle recently gave a comprehensive tour of Port Credit Yacht Club to Oana Raluca Gherghe, the Consul General of Romania in Toronto and Gabriela Covaci, founder and director of Arts4People Movement, a not-for-profit organization. The consulate is covering the cost of travel and Halton Region-based Arts4People Movement has been instrumental in helping to raise funds to cover the living costs and ensure the Romanian team enjoys the best of Canadian hospitality. During their stay, the athletes will have the opportunity to visit some local iconic attractions, including the CN Tower, Canada’s Wonderland, and Niagara Falls. Her efforts, along with the support of the consulate, highlight the collaborative spirit that makes such international participation possible.
“The visit from the Romanian consulate was significant as it represented a strengthening of cultural and sporting ties between Romania and Canada,” explained Sorin. “It demonstrated the consulate’s commitment to supporting Romanian youth and promoting international camaraderie through sailing. The visit was an opportunity to showcase PCYC’s facilities and the vibrant sailing community here, highlighting the mutual benefits of such international exchanges.”

Past commodore Mark Searle provided a history of the club and the PCYC Learn to Sail Program as he walked the grounds with our special guests, highlighting PCYC’s commitment to family and youth with the playground, pool, and wide array of sailing and power boats. “They were genuinely impressed with the vastness of the property and club and very appreciative of the support from PCYC. They really enjoyed our enthusiasm for supporting their sailors,” Mark noted.
The upcoming regattas, hosted at PCYC from July 18th through 21st, promise to be a celebration of international camaraderie and competitive spirit. We encourage all members of our yacht club to come out and support these talented young sailors as they compete. Le consulat de Roumanie à Toronto a récemment rendu visite au Port Credit Yacht Club, confirmant la participation d’un groupe talentueux de jeunes marins roumains aux prochaines régates Steerers Invitational et Four Sisters Open, commanditées par DriveHG.ca.
Sara Cristina Patache, 16 ans, ancienne championne nationale roumaine d’Optimist, participera à la compétition dans la classe de bateaux ILCA, en compagnie de Maria Radu, 13 ans, et de Iulia Vartej, 12 ans, qui participeront aux régates en Opti. Ces jeunes navigatrices représentent l’Asociatia Club Sportiva Constanta Sailing, une organisation renommée de voile pour les jeunes basée dans la ville de Constanta, située sur la pittoresque côte de la mer Noire. Deux autres marins roumains pourraient également rejoindre l’équipe, accentuant ainsi la présence internationale lors de nos régates.

Sorin Grigorof, membre de PCYC, a joué un rôle clé dans la mise en place de cette initiative internationale : “Tout a commencé lorsque j’ai visité un club de voile à Constanta, en Roumanie”, a déclaré Sorin. “Pendant mon séjour, j’ai discuté avec certains membres du club local de l’idée que de jeunes marins roumains puissent venir participer à des compétitions au Canada. Nous avons rapidement réalisé à quel point cette initiative pouvait être bénéfique pour tous. Les jeunes Roumains pourraient naviguer dans des conditions différentes et découvrir notre communauté de voile. C’est un moyen fantastique de nouer des amitiés internationales et de faire progresser le sport, et je suis très enthousiaste à l’idée de voir ce projet se concrétiser.
Sorin a également joué un rôle essentiel en mettant en relation le consulat roumain et PCYC, où l’ancien commodore Mark Searle a récemment fait visiter Port Credit Yacht Club à Oana Raluca Gherghe, la consule générale de Roumanie à Toronto, et à Gabriela Covaci, fondatrice et directrice de Arts4People Movement, une organisation à but non lucratif. Le consulat assume les frais de voyage et Arts4People Movement, basé dans la région de Halton, a contribué à collecter des fonds pour couvrir les frais de subsistance et assurer à l’équipe roumaine le meilleur de l’hospitalité canadienne. Pendant leur séjour, les athlètes auront l’occasion de visiter certaines attractions locales emblématiques, notamment la Tour CN, Canada’s Wonderland et les chutes du Niagara. Ses efforts, ainsi que le soutien du consulat, illustrent l’esprit de collaboration qui rend possible une telle participation internationale.
“La visite du consulat roumain était importante car elle représentait un renforcement des liens culturels et sportifs entre la Roumanie et le Canada”, a expliqué M. Sorin. “Elle a démontré l’engagement du consulat à soutenir la jeunesse roumaine et à promouvoir la camaraderie internationale par le biais de la voile. Cette visite a été l’occasion de présenter les installations de PCYC et le dynamisme de la communauté de la voile ici, en soulignant les avantages mutuels de tels échanges internationaux”.

L’ancien commodore Mark Searle a fait l’historique du club et du programme d’apprentissage de la voile de PCYC en se promenant sur le terrain avec nos invités spéciaux, soulignant l’engagement de PCYC envers la famille et les jeunes avec son terrain de jeu, sa piscine et son large éventail de voiliers et de bateaux à moteur. “Ils ont été réellement impressionnés par l’immensité de la propriété et du club et ont beaucoup apprécié le soutien de PCYC. Ils ont vraiment apprécié notre enthousiasme à soutenir leurs marins”, a noté Mark.
Les régates, organisées à PCYC du 18 au 21 juillet, promettent d’être une célébration de la camaraderie internationale et de l’esprit de compétition.
