The CODA executive met recently to plan for the upcoming year and we wish to update all the members and their families. Clearly, many of our plans are still clouded in uncertainty due to the ongoing pandemic. All CODA sanctioned plans and activities will seek to abide by the government advisories current at the time.
Recently IODA updated their calendar of events for the 2021. Three events traditionally attended by CODA members are scheduled to be held in the first half of the year. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic, the normal selection process for these events was unable to take plac e (2020 Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championships was cancelled). According to the CODA by-laws, it is incumbant on the CODA executive to come up with a new selection process.
A subcommittee was formed with input from many of the Optimist coaches in Canada. It was decided that hosting another national selection event before the IODA events of early 2021 was not realistic. The subcommittee then recommended using the results from the 2019 Canadian Championships in order to select members for the CODA teams for early 2021 IODA events. This motion was passed by the full executive.
The 2021 CODA teams for the IODA North American Championship, IODA European Championship, and IODA World Championship will be selected based on ranking from the 2019 Canadian Optimist Championships. An updated ranking of sailors for 2021 IODA events will be updated and posted to the CODA website.
Selection for the 2021 IODA South American Optimist Championships scheduled for Nov 6th will be decided at a later date.
Teams are scheduled to be formed in early 2021 with acceptance letters sent out in January 2021. These plans may be delayed depending on the state on the ongoing pandemic.
CODA National Championships
The 2021 Canadian Optimist Dinghy National Championships is scheduled to be held at the Chester Yacht Club in Chester, NS in August 2021. The specific dates will be posted when confirmed.
Spring Break CODA Clinic in Vancouver BC
CODA has scheduled a clinic for March 14-20, 2021 in West Vancouver, BC. The tentative 7-day event will include a 5 day clinic followed by a 2 day regatta. A limited number of h ulls for charter will be made available. The clinic will be open to all CODA members. The clinic will proceed depending on COVID protocols and government restrictions at the time. More information will follow in the upcoming months.
The CODA executive recognizes that it is an uncertain time for sailors, coaches, clubs and parents. While we are uncertain as to what will happen in 2021 we wanted to provide as much clarity as possible. We look forward to seeing many of you at events in 2021.
